My journey into public service began with recognizing that we need people to step up and participate, providing voters a choice.
Southern Utah roots
I grew up in St George and returned in 2007 to teach at Dixie State College, now Utah Tech University. With a teacher and a deputy sheriff as parents I developed a clarity of right and wrong, structures and fairness, and contributing to society.
Checks and Balances
I have always been aware and interested in politics. I remember dinner table talk about Watergate and Skylab. But it was not until this election that I felt a call to run for office. I believe in the profoundly American ideal of checks and balances. The balance of power between three equal branches of government was the right choice when the country was founded and it’s the right choice for us now.
Contribution to area
I have spent considerable time volunteering in the community. I have been appointed to serve a second term as a member of the Recreation Arts & Parks (RAP) Advisory Board for Washington County. I am in my third year as Chair of that board. I also have served as a commissioner on the St George Arts Commission since 2021.
My work at UT
I have led and served on the Utah Tech University campus. I was the Founding Chair of the Music Department and led the department for ten years. I also wrote the music degrees that helped lead the campus to university status. I served a term as President of the Faculty Senate. I am currently the Associate Dean of the College of the Arts. Guiding students and assisting colleagues gives me great fulfillment.
Music is my passion
I earned my doctorate in music from UNLV. I’ve had a great career as a professional musician along with my experience in education. I lead the non-profit St George Jazz which is dedicated to preserving and promoting jazz and jazz education.
Family man
Carrie and I have been married for 39 years and have three married children and are expecting grandchild number four in the summer of 2026.
